"TALLAHASSEE — In a stunningly swift rise to power, first-year Winter Park Republican Rep. Dean Cannon said Monday that he has sewn up the state House speaker's post for 2011 and 2012.

"Cannon, a lawyer with Orlando's Gray Robinson firm who turns 37 next week, is poised to become the first Central Florida House leader since U.S. Rep. Tom Feeney, R-Oviedo, held the post for two years after the 2000 elections. . . .

"Cannon is the first speaker-designate in memory to be chosen by his colleagues five years ahead of his formal election, which would occur if Republicans maintain control of the House after the 2010 elections. . . ."
