2012 Legislative Session to start two months early

Florida's 2012 Legislative Session starts in January and ends in early March.  In most years, the session starts the 1st week of March and ends the 1st week of May.  Key dates for the 2012 calendar are:
  • Week of September 19, 2011 - committee meetings commence (1st of six weeks of meetings)
  • January 10, 2012 - Regular Session convenes
  • March 9, 2012  - 60th day - last day of Regular Session (unless extended)
Redistricting is the reason for the early start date.  Redistricting of Florida legislative and U.S. congressional districts occurs every ten years, after the U.S. census in completed.  Starting the legislative session early allows more time for the various legal reviews required prior to primaries taking place.  For more on redistricting, see:
